Getting around the site

The four doors

The top of every page has the same four links.

• Photographs — every album, arranged by country. Open a country and its albums run down the page as a timeline, newest year first, each card showing the year, the album’s name and a strip of four photographs. Tap Gallery → to open the album.
• Journal — the letters home, one per stop, filterable by region with the chips at the top. Each card carries the country, the title and the opening lines; Read → opens the whole letter.
• Currency — the banknotes, one page per note, with a write-up of the design and what it was worth at the time. Countries that share a currency (the euro, the East Caribbean dollar) are listed under the currency, not the country.
• Countries — the list of every country on the site with a count of what it holds.

Inside an album

An album opens as a grid. Tap any photograph to open the photo view: the picture at full size, with ‹ Previous and Next › underneath (or the arrow keys on a computer, or a swipe on a phone) and a filmstrip of the whole album along the bottom. The caption under the picture names the place and the year. All N photos at the top takes you back to the grid.

Every album address can be shared as it is — the link opens the album for anyone.

The numbers are live

Every count you see — photographs in a country, galleries in a year, notes in a currency — is worked out from the archive each time the site is built, never typed in. If a number looks wrong, the photographs are wrong, not the label.

What you will not see

Some albums, and some photographs inside public albums, are for friends only. They are not on the public site at all: not in the counts, not in any list, not in search. If somebody has sent you a friend link, see Signing in as a friend.
