The artwork
Front: Oto Iskandar di Nata in suit and tie, named in small capitals beneath the portrait — the Sundanese teacher and Volksraad member remembered as a national hero. Bank Indonesia and DUA PULUH RIBU RUPIAH run along the foot, the numeral 20000 filling the upper left in outlined figures. Greens and blues over fine batik-derived guilloche; the Garuda Pancasila arms, a vertical 20000 and the red Bank Indonesia "B" shield sit on the plain right-hand panel.
Back: A tea picker at work in the plantation rows, a great woven basket strapped to her back, a second picker behind her among the bushes — captioned simply PEMETIK TEH, 'tea picker'. The upland tea gardens of West Java are one of the country's older export images, and the engraving keeps it a working scene rather than a pastoral one. Below runs the issuing formula: by the grace of God Almighty, Bank Indonesia issues this money as legal tender to the value of twenty thousand rupiah.
In circulation
The 2004 emission of the twenty thousand, part of the green-to-purple family Bank Indonesia rolled out in the mid-2000s. It carried the denomination for a decade, until the 2016 series replaced the design entirely with Sam Ratulangi on the face and the Gong dance and Mount Kelimutu behind.
